Dave Ogilvy is one of the few people of his era that was actually born and raised in Vancouver.

His first introduction to motorsport was a 1962 Sports Car Club of British Columbia (SCCBC) event known as A Wonderful World of Westwood Weekend. These events were held for SCCBC members and friends where they would spend a weekend camping at the new track, do construction and maintenance and be allowed to drive (slowly, under supervision) their road cars on the track. Dave had been to races at Westwood but when he finally got to drive his new MGA on the track he was hooked.

Buying a used MGA 1500, he race prepared the car and in 1963 began his racing career by wining his first novice race, his first senior race and the Conference championship for class H. He repeated the championship in 1963.

By 1964 Dave had acquired the ex- Bob McLean Cooper Formula Junior and campaigned it successfully as part of the Bob McLean racing team.

For 1966 he acquired the former Graham Hill Lotus 27/35 formula Two car and fitted a Ford Twin Cam motor for Formula B. Dave had quite a few successes with the car including nearly

taking an overall victory at the 1969 Harewood, Ontario round of the Formula A, B and C Gulf Canada National Championship Series. Dave also ran the car in a number of US Formula Continental events on the West Coast. Later, Dave bought a Brabham BT 29 formula B car for a serious attempt on the 1972 Canadian Championship which was by that time for Formula B cars. All through this period, Dave received support and backing from his good friend and GVMPS inducted member Roy

Shadbolt. With Roy’s untimely passing in 1968, Roy’s widow Audrey continued the support. The 1972 season proved to be somewhat of a disappointment as the Braham was found to have some serious faults. After the July race at Ste-Croix Quebec, Dave decided he had had enough and sold the car to a Victoria driver.

Having quit racing forever as so many do after a disappointing season, Dave took on a new challenge; he ran for and was elected to, the presidency of the SCCBC becoming the manager of the Westwood racing circuit for 1974 and 1975. “It burned me out” he said.

Following his term with the SCCBC, Dave took on another different career stating as team Manager for Ken Bailey and John Schuberg’s works backed Abingdon Motors Team. Under Dave’s management the team’s drivers had a great deal of success winning a couple of Canadian championships at Mont Tremblant in 1976 and at with Dave himself back as a driver at Atlantic Motorsports Park in 1977. After winding up his career with a win, Dave took up boating.

Dave is now retired and lives in Maple Bay on Vancouver Island.
